Must-Have Items for Your Postpartum Recovery

After baby arrives, postpartum recovery begins. Your body has been through a major transformation, and needs time and energy to heal. Having the right tools and resources available can help. Whether you’re a first-time mom or an experienced parent, these must-have essentials will help you navigate the early days and weeks after giving birth, so you can focus on feeling good and snuggling your newborn.

Postpartum Recovery Must-Haves


  1. Comfortable Postpartum Clothing

    Choose soft, loose-fitting clothes that are gentle on your body. You'll want to feel cozy and unrestricted while your body heals. I recommend the following:

    • High-waisted leggings and loose joggers

    • Oversized shirts and breastfeeding tops (Loose scoop neck tees are great)

    • A warm cardigan or robe - Postpartum hormones are a rollercoaster. Oscillating between chills and sweats may indeed happen.

    • Sleeper bras or nursing bras (no underwires)

    • Optional:

      • Non-slip socks or slippers - I recommend these for tired, anxious parents, particularly when there are stairs in the home.

      • Pack of high-waisted cotton "granny panties" - You won't mind throwing these away if things get messy.


  2. Perineal and Incision Care

    For vaginal births, you'll want:

    • Peri bottles for rinsing after bathroom trips (keep one in each bathroom)

    • Witch hazel pads and/or perineal spray

    • Padsicles or perineal ice packs (cold packs made for postpartum recovery)

    • Optional:

    For cesarean births, I recommend:

    • Belly binder to reduce pain and support your posture

    • High-waisted or low-cut bottoms - choose clothing and underwear styles that sit well above or well below your incision.


  3. Postpartum Bleeding

    Lochia (postpartum bleeding) is a normal part of recovery. It is typically heavier than your average period, so you'll probably want overnight pads, disposable undies, or adult diapers. Tampons and menstrual cups should not be used until your doctor gives the all-clear.


  4. Hydration and Nutrition

    Your body needs fluids and nutrients to heal. Keep a large water bottle nearby and sip frequently. Opt for easy-to-grab snacks like trail mix, energy bites, and whole fruits. Set up a meal train or prepare a stash of nourishing freezer meals to reduce stress and stay fed.


  5. Breastfeeding and Pumping Supplies

    If you’re breastfeeding or pumping, these items are lifesavers:

    • Nipple cream, olive oil, or coconut oil for soothing soreness

    • Reusable breast pads (for leaks)

    • High-quality double electric breast pump (Plug-in models are more reliable than wearables for bringing in milk supply)


  6. A Cozy Resting Area

    Set up a cozy corner in your home with everything you might need within reach: your phone, snacks, a water bottle, a blanket, and baby essentials like diapers and wipes. This space can be your go-to for breastfeeding, cuddling, and relaxing with your baby.


  7. Mental Health Support

    Postpartum hormones can cause emotional ups and downs. Be kind to yourself and proactively seek support. This could include:

    • Joining a new parent support group

    • Downloading a mindfulness or relaxation app

    • Scheduling time to talk with a postpartum doula or therapist

    • Pro tip:

      • Remove the words "but" and "at least" from your vocabulary - You can be in love with your baby AND disappointed by your birth story. Both things can be true at the same time. Allow yourself space to feel all the feelings.


  8. Lactation Support

    Breastfeeding is natural, but it isn't always easy. Having a lactation consultant available can make all the difference in overcoming hurdles and finding a rhythm that works for you and your baby. I recommend connecting with an IBCLC while pregnant. It's easier to reach out for help when you already know who you're calling.
