If you’re struggling with breastfeeding and aren’t sure who to reach out to, you’re not alone. Many parents search for help only to get stuck wondering: Who’s the right person to support me and my baby?
Keep reading so you can get the help you need sooner.
What Is a Lactation Consultant?
The term lactation consultant is often used broadly—but it’s not actually a regulated title in Canada. That means anyone can call themselves a lactation consultant, regardless of their training or qualifications.
However, one type of lactation consultant is internationally certified: the IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). These professionals have completed extensive education, hundreds (or sometimes thousands) of supervised hours, and passed a rigorous 4-hour exam. IBCLCs are the gold standard in lactation care, especially in complex or clinical situations.
What Is a Breastfeeding Specialist?
A Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) is someone who’s completed focused training in lactation and breastfeeding support. While CBSs aren’t required to meet the same clinical requirements as IBCLCs, they are educated and trained to help with many common breastfeeding concerns—including latch issues, nipple pain, milk supply questions, and more.
I’m a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist myself—and I’m currently working toward my IBCLC designation, which means I bring both evidence-based training and hands-on experience to every visit.
So… Who Should You Call?
It depends on your needs. Here’s a quick guide:
Situation | Best Fit |
You’re having general concerns about latch, supply, or pain. | Either a CBS (like me!) or an IBCLC |
Your baby was born early, has medical concerns, or you're exclusively pumping or combo feeding | Either a CBS or an IBCLC |
You’ve tried everything and still feel stuck | An experienced IBCLC with personalized support |
If you're looking for someone who will come to your home, meet you where you are (literally and emotionally), and help you breastfeed with more confidence—you’re in the right place.
