Hey new moms!
If you’re wondering how often you should feed your little one, you’re not alone. Figuring out a feeding schedule can be tricky, given all the advice floating around the internet. Let’s break it down and make it a bit easier.
Understanding Newborn Feeding Cues:
Babies typically give pretty clear signs when they’re hungry. Here are a few common ones to look out for:
Rooting: If your baby’s turning their head towards you or making sucking motions, they’re probably ready to eat.
Smacking Lips: If you hear those little lip smacks, it’s a good sign they’re looking for something to suck on.
Hand-to-Mouth Movements: If your baby’s sucking on their fingers or putting their hands in their mouth, they might be hungry.
Fussiness: Crying or being restless around feeding times is another clue.
Listening to these cues will help you know when to feed, making it easier for you and your baby.
How Often and How Long?
In the early weeks, your baby needs to eat at least every 2 to 3 hours, day and night. That's 8-12 feedings (or more) a day! Each feeding might last 20 to 45 minutes, depending on how your baby feeds.
It might seem like a lot at first, but this is biologically normal. Babies have tiny tummies and need frequent nourishment to grow and thrive.
Adapting to Your Baby’s Needs:
As your baby gets a bit older, their feeding schedule will change. Around 2 to 3 months, you might notice they eat less often but take in more at each feeding.
Also, babies go through many growth spurts and might want to eat more frequently for a short time. This is all part of the process. The best thing to do is go with the flow and follow your baby’s lead.

Feeding your newborn has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. By paying attention to your baby’s hunger cues and adjusting as they grow, you’ll find a rhythm that works for both of you. You’ve got this!
